  MASSULARIA

 

Scientific name: Massularia acuminata
Common name: Massularia
Family name: Rubiacece

Description: A small understory of height between 1.5
to 2.8m tall fund in forest areas.
Habit: Could be traced to poor base forests.
Part used: Stem, root
Active ingredients: Has androgenic potentials.

Uses: It is aphrodisiac. It improves body building, energy. Treats general debility and malaria; reduces diabetes and improves general well being.
NB: Folklore or traditionalists indicate that the roots were used for the cure of Hernia and all stomach disorders.


  FADOGIA

Scientific name: Fadogia agrestis
Common Name: Fadogia

Description: A shrub of height 1m tall found in groves
in the savannah belts.
Habitat: Savannah
Part used: Stems, Roots
Family: Rubiaceae
Active Ingredients: Alkaloids and Saponins, anthraquinones and, Flavonoids also present.

Uses: Aphodisiac, for general body building



  BAOBAB

 


Scientific name: Adansonia digitata
Common name: Baobab
Local name: (Ewe) adzido, alagbatsi
Family name: Bombacaceae

Description: It is a big savannah tree growing up to 30m
with trunk base.
Habitat: It is found in hot, dry savannah growing in
solitary individualism.
Part used: Bark, fruit pulp, seed, leaves.
Active ingredients: Has twice much calcium as milk, anti-oxidants, iron and potassium, has 6times the vitamin C of an orange, sugars.

Uses: The leaves are potherbs and also eaten as relish. Fruit used as beverage. Seed produce edible oil. Baobab fruit used as ingredient in smoothies and cereal bars. Bark used as fibre marcerated for ropes, harness, fishing lines, nets, baskets. Soap can be made from the ash of the burnt pods. It is called the “tree of life”.


  SESAME

Description: It is an annual plant growing to 50 to 100cm tall, opposite leaves 4 to 14cm long with an entire margin, broad lanceolate.
Part used: Seed
Habitat: It is cultivated in the northern belt of Ghana. Active ingredients: Iron, magnesium, manganese,copper, calcium, vitamin B, (thiamine) and vitamin E (tocopherol) lignans, sesamin, anti phytic acid, polyunsaturated fat.

Uses: It is an antioxidant and anti - cancer; reduces blood cholesterol. It prolongs youth and beauty. It is for strength and energy. Oil used for massage it is a flavouring agent as the leaves are also potherb.
