  ANNATTO

 

Common name: Annatto
Local name: Daagyene
Family name: Bixaceae

Description: It is a shrub or small tree of about 5m introduced into the country from South America.
Habitat: it is cultivated on farms in E/R, Brong Ahafo
and neighbouring, Cot d' Ivoire.
Part used: Seed
Active ingredient: Bixin

Uses: It is a flavouring agent. Used as food colour in butter, cheese, margarine, chocolate, smoked fish and pastry.

  GINGER

Common name: Ginger
Family: Zingiberaceae
Part used: Rhizome
Active ingredients: Volatile oil, Vitamin B group, vitamin C, reducing sugars, phosphatic acids, lecithins, folic acids

Uses: For indigestion, appetizer and anti - emetic, febrifuge; for cough and joint pains ;'carminative and flavoring agent . Galactogogues


  WHITE’S GINGER

 


Scientific name: Mondia Whitei
Common name: white's ginger, tonic root
Local name: Asase hwam
Family name: Periplocaceae (Apocynaceae)

Description: it is a perennial, woody, rather robust and vigorous climber that grows from a large tuberous rootstock. The roots are aromatic and apparently taste like ginger or liquorice etc.
Habit: it is found in coastlands and midlands and of dry forests.
Part used: roots and leaves.
Active ingredients: Vitamins A, D, K and E, and minerals:
magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium and protein.

Uses: Used as an antacid and to treat indigestion. It is tonic to stimulate appetite. It is used for the treatment of anorexia and bilharzia. Fits in children and stress and tension in adults are apparently also treated with Mondia whitei. The roots are an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and impotence.Grounded roots used in making tea that is used in
treatment of general pains and aches. The dried leaves, powdered and mixed with food and taken daily as supplement. Other uses include the treatment of hypertension, stroke, anemia, asthma, hangover, mastitis and allergies. It is also taken to improve sleep,
enhance urination, ease birth pains and as mouth refresher and toothbrush. The leaves serve as animal fodder and are consumed by humans as vegetables. The bitter tasting roots have a vanilla odour and sweet aftertaste and are used to make a beverage similar to ginger beer. In West Africa, the roots are used to make an energizing drink for wedding parties when the roots are brewed in alcohol. It is a spice as well. Its also for the treatment of urinary tract infections.

Family: Asclepiadaceae

Description: Large climbers, rooting at nodes, leaves
elliptic, acuminate, base acute to acuminate, glabrous
above sparsely or densely tomentose beneath
Habit: it is a herb native to the tropical forests and
high savannahs.

Part used: leaves
Active ingredients: A group of oleanane type
triterperoid saponins known as Gymnemic acids.

Uses: Treatment of diabetes
